Key Revenue Concepts
Recognized Revenue
Revenue that has been earned and recognized during the reporting period.
- Based on revenue recognition rules
- Derived from:
- Revenue Schedules (for deferred revenue)
- Billing data (for non-deferred revenue)
This represents the actual earned portion of revenue for a given period.
Deferred Revenue
Deferred Revenue refers to revenue that has been billed or invoiced but has not yet been earned. It is recorded as a liability and recognized over time based on the subscription term and the configured revenue recognition rules (for example, straight-line or prorated).
- Recorded as a liability until earned
- Managed through Revenue Schedules (RSL)
Refer Revenue Rules for more information.
Relationship Between Recognized and Deferred Revenue
For transactions subject to deferred revenue recognition:
- An invoice is generated.
- The billed amount is initially recorded as deferred revenue.
- Revenue is recognized periodically according to the configured revenue recognition rules.
- At the end of the contract term, the deferred revenue balance is fully recognized.
Example
- Annual Subscription: $1,200 (12 months)
- Monthly recognition: $100 per month
| Month | Recognized Revenue | Deferred Balance |
| Jan | $100 | $1,100 |
| Feb | $100 | $1,000 |
| ... | ... | ... |
| Dec | $100 | $0 |
- Recognized Revenue → Earned and reported
- Deferred Revenue → Billed but not yet earned
Customer & Subscription Hierarchy

- Customer level – Displays the total revenue associated with each customer.
