Overview
3D Secure (3DS) is an additional authentication protocol used by card issuers to verify the identity of a cardholder during payment-related operations. It provides an extra layer of security to help prevent unauthorized use of payment cards.
Depending on the payment gateway and card issuer, a 3D Secure authentication challenge may be required when:
- Adding a payment method.
- Processing a payment.
If authentication is required, the card issuer displays a verification screen where the cardholder must complete the authentication process before the operation can continue.
When 3D Secure Authentication Is Required
A 3D Secure authentication challenge may be displayed in the following scenarios:
Adding a Payment Method
When adding an eligible payment card, the payment gateway or card issuer may require additional verification before the payment method is successfully added.
Processing a Payment
Some payment gateways, such as Stripe, may also require 3D Secure authentication during payment processing or payment authorization, depending on the transaction and the card issuer's requirements.
Authentication Methods
The authentication challenge requires the shopper to complete two of the following three authentication methods:
- A password provided by the card issuer.
- A verification code or application on a device registered with the card issuer.
- Biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.
The authentication methods presented depend on the card issuer.
Supported Cards
The following credit card brands support 3D Secure authentication:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express (Amex)
- JCB
Note: Eligible credit cards and debit cards may require 3D Secure authentication, depending on the issuing bank and card configuration.
Authentication Flow
The authentication process generally follows these steps:
- Enter the payment card information.
- Submit the request to add the payment method or process the payment.
- If required, the card issuer displays the 3D Secure authentication challenge.
- Complete the required authentication.
- After successful authentication, the requested operation continues.
Ordway Payments
Use the payment gateway test environment to validate 3D Secure (3DS) authentication flows before deploying to production.
Ordway Payments supports testing of supported 3D Secure authentication scenarios using the payment gateway's test cards.
