Overview
This article clarifies the expected behavior of Bonus Units and provides latest guidance regarding their usage in Ordway. Bonus Units were originally designed to provide customers with additional usage capacity at no cost. However, this feature is currently planned for deprecation, and alternate solutions are recommended.
Observed Issue
A customer reported that Bonus Units added to a subscription were not being consumed as expected during billing or usage calculations.
Is This a Known Issue?
Yes.
Based on internal review, Bonus Units are planned for deprecation, and as a result, behavior may be inconsistent or not actively supported in new configurations.
Expected Behavior (Historical)
The typical intended logic for Bonus Units was:
| Scenario | Expected Consumption Behavior |
|---|---|
| Usage is generated | Bonus Units are consumed after standard purchased units, not before |
| Bonus Units remain unused | They continue to remain available until purchased units are exhausted |
| Control/priority configuration | No configuration was available to change the consumption order |
So historically:
Bonus Units were not consumed first — they were consumed last, after paid units.
Current Status
Bonus Units are planned for removal from the platform.
Behavior may not be updated or maintained moving forward.
Recommended Alternative
We recommend using the Wallet of Units (Prepayment Units) feature, which is currently under active development and enhancement.
Why Use Wallet of Units?
Functions similarly to Bonus Units
Supported going forward
Allows units to be purchased at $0, effectively mirroring Bonus Unit functionality
