This article explains how Ordway connects to Stripe gateways, the payment methods supported, how payment methods are enabled, and how gateway setting updates are processed.
Contents
Overview
Ordway integrates directly with Stripe to automatically sync supported payment methods and configurations. This ensures consistency between your Stripe account and Ordway while minimizing manual setup.
Connect a New Stripe Gateway
When you connect a Stripe gateway from Ordway’s Payments Gateway UI, Ordway automatically retrieves your payment method configuration from Stripe.
How Ordway Syncs Payment Methods from Stripe
Ordway fetches the payment methods enabled in your Stripe Dashboard
These are compared against the payment methods currently supported by Ordway
Any overlapping payment methods are enabled and displayed in Ordway
Ordway uses the same configuration you’ve already set up in Stripe
This ensures consistency between your Stripe account and Ordway without requiring duplicate setup.
Payment Methods Supported in Ordway (Stripe)
Ordway currently supports the following Stripe payment methods:
Credit Card
Standard card payments supported via Stripe.
ACH Debit (US Bank Account)
Supported verification methods:
Financial Connections
Microdeposits (Statement Descriptor)
Security Measure
Stripe locks an account after 3 unsuccessful attempts while performing ACH deposit amount verification. When this occurs, you must delete the payment method and then re-add.

Stripe Payment Method Configuration Errors
If you see an error such as:
“Payment method <Payment Method Type> is not enabled on your Stripe account dashboard”
This means the payment method is not enabled in your Stripe Dashboard.
Why this happens
Older (legacy) integrations did not validate Stripe payment method configuration
Ordway’s newer Payment Elements experience requires Stripe payment methods to be explicitly enabled
How to fix
Log in to your Stripe Dashboard.
Go to Settings → Payment Methods
Enable the required payment method, by clicking Active.
Return to Ordway and refresh the gateway configuration
Settings on the Current Gateway
Any updates made to payment gateway settings are processed as a background job. Depending on the number of customers affected, these changes may take some time to complete.
While the update is in progress, Ordway safely applies the changes in the background to avoid disruption to billing and payment workflows.
When Would You Update Gateway Settings?
You may need to update your gateway settings in scenarios such as:
Enabling an additional payment method (Example, adding ACH Debit alongside Credit Cards)
Disabling a payment method due to high processing fees
Applying processing fees for Credit Card payments across all customers
Updating the default payment method used for transactions
Important Notes
Gateway setting updates do not take effect immediately and may require processing time
Existing payments continue to process safely while updates are applied
You will see the updated behavior once the background job completes
Restrict Display of Saved Payment Methods
Ordway allows you to hide specific payment method types from the customer UI—without removing them from Stripe.
How it works?
When the Restrict saved payment methods checkbox is enabled at the gateway level:
The selected payment method type (for example, Credit Card) is not displayed to customers
Any existing or previously saved payment methods of that type are hidden
-
The restricted payment method is not used for:
AutoPay
Payment runs
Invoice payments
This gives you control over how payment methods are presented and used in Ordway, while keeping your gateway configuration intact.
Example Use Case
You operate across multiple business verticals and use Credit Cards as a payment method in Stripe. However:
Credit Card processing fees are high
You do not want Credit Cards used within Ordway for payment processing
You do not want to delete Credit Card configurations from your Stripe dashboard
With this setting, you can disable Credit Card payments in Ordway only, while continuing to keep them enabled in Stripe for other use cases.
Important Notes
Restricting payment methods does not delete them from Stripe
Gateway updates may take time to apply
Existing payment workflows continue during processing
New Account Limitations
New Stripe accounts are subject to processing limits during the first four months, based on your payment history (for example, card payments and ACH):
$6,000 USD per day
$10,000 USD per week
To request a limit increase, contact the Stripe Support Team.
For more information, see Stripe's ACH Payments.
Effective August 18, 2024: Stripe verification requirements apply. See Stripe Verification Process
