When adding a new credit card, the cardholder may be prompted to enter a verification code before the card can be successfully added.
Why Verification Is Required
The verification prompt is part of the 3D Secure (3DS) authentication process. Depending on the card issuer and its security requirements, additional authentication may be required to verify the cardholder.
Where Does the Phone Number Come From?
The phone number displayed during the 3DS verification process is associated with the cardholder's account at the card-issuing bank.
The card issuer determines:
- Whether additional verification is required
- Which verification method is used
- Which phone number or contact information is presented
Can the Phone Number Be Changed?
The phone number cannot be changed or selected from the card verification screen.
To update the phone number used for future verification attempts, the cardholder should contact their card-issuing bank and request an update to the contact information associated with the card/account.
Expected Result
Once the card issuer updates its records, the updated contact information should be used for future 3DS authentication attempts, subject to the issuer's authentication configuration.
